What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is the most widely used natural healthcare profession in the world. Chiropractors specialise in the examination, diagnosis and management of problems and/or conditions that can affect the nerves, joints or muscles of the body.

As Chiropractic is a primary healthcare profession, you do not need to be referred by your doctor (unless it is a requirement of your health insurance company). Many of our patients are, however, recommended to see us by their doctors.

Alongside assessing and treating the musculoskeletal system we also need to take into consideration your home and work environments, hobbies and sporting activities and anything else that may have an effect on your physical and mental health.

The manipulation of joints (‘adjustments’) is commonly the main basis of your Chiropractic care for your condition. However, your Chiropractor may also employ other procedures in the course of your care. These may include massage techniques, Dry Needling, and mobilisation. You may also be advised to make lifestyle adjustments such as dietary change, workstation and posture alterations, and exercise programmes. The use of heat or cold therapy may also be advised.

If your Chiropractor considers that your condition would be better managed by another healthcare practitioner or your GP we will refer you to them.

What is a Chiropractic adjustment or joint manipulation?

A Chiropractic adjustment is the use of a specific force to a joint in a precise direction made by the Chiropractor’s hand. This is used to restore the joint to normal motion, reduce muscle spasm and alleviate the associated pain.

Does treatment hurt?

A Chiropractic adjustment does not generally hurt - although there may be some minor discomfort which quickly passes. Patients normally find that after the initial treatment or two, as your symptoms improve and you feel more relaxed with your Chiropractor, treatments are generally much more pleasant.

What are the risks?

Chiropractic carries far fewer risks than other possible treatment options. Serious side effects are extremely uncommon. Very rarely, neck manipulation has been linked with strokes, although research has not definitively proven this and has shown that Chiropractic can be one of the most effective and safest forms of treatment for certain conditions. Our Chiropractors will be happy to discuss any concerns that you may have or offer alternative Chiropractic options for your treatment.

A regulated profession
In common with medical practitioners and dentists, all Chiropractors are registered by law, and trained to degree standard. The profession is regulated through the General Chiropractic Council (GCC), it is illegal to practice as a Chiropractor without being registered with the GCC.

All of our Chiropractors are registered with the GCC and British Chiropractic Association.

Your First Visit

Your Chiropractor will discuss with you, your health and reasons for asking for Chiropractic care. The consultation will usually last approximately one to one and a half hours depending on your problem. During this time your Chiropractor will take a thorough case history, asking about your current complaint and also your past health. Your Chiropractor will take you through a thorough examination of your spine and any relevant joints combined with orthopaedic and neurological tests to help arrive at a diagnosis. Should it be necessary we may refer you to your General Practitioner for blood tests, x-rays or further investigations; or privately for MRI scans where indicated.

We will tell you if we don’t think that we can help you!

If we do not need to take x-rays or perform further tests, treatment is commonly offered on your first visit. You will be given an explanation as to what is wrong with you in clear and plain language. You will be advised as to how many treatments you are likely to need and what the costs involved are. We believe that Chiropractic should not be a passive treatment therefore we often give other home care advice such as postural and lifestyle changes and measures that can be taken to aid your recovery. Exercises to be done at home or in the gym are likely to be given to you to help your recovery and to avoid recurrence of your problem. If we do not think that you will benefit from Chiropractic treatment we will tell you.

Subsequent treatment

Whilst some conditions may only need one or two visits to get you feeling fantastic again, most patients that we see have suffered pain for years or have injured joints or muscles. These conditions are likely to require more management including treatment, home exercises and postural correction.

In order to be able to examine and treat you thoroughly our patients are usually asked to change into a gown. If this concerns you then please feel free to bring a pair of shorts or discuss it with one of our Chiropractors.
