Pregnant Women, Babies and Children

Pregnancy is a time when your body goes through many physical and chemical changes. These changes can aggravate existing spinal problems and also through the hormonal change, softening ligaments can make your spine and pelvis unstable. Postural changes often occur as a result of increased body weight. Common symptoms during pregnancy may be low back pain, buttock pain, groin pain or sciatica.

As you go through the growth changes of pregnancy, and when you are looking after your baby Chiropractic can help correct joint restrictions and achieve a more stable spine and better functioning pelvis. Your Chiropractor may advise you on postural change, lifting and bending techniques that may help to reduce the strain on your body.

Many women find that Chiropractic care gives them relief from low back pain in pregnancy and after giving birth. They will often come in for spinal checks both for themselves and their children.

Why get my child checked?

When the baby’s head engages with the pelvis in the late stages of pregnancy, there can be a lot of stress on its head and back. If the labour is very prolonged or the baby is breeched or a forceps delivery is needed, further stress may be placed on the spine. As the child grows up, learns to walk, climb and run falls are inevitable. These can affect the spine and bones as they are continuing to develop. At school heavy bags, poor posture and poor seating can compound problems.

The result can be tight muscles, which may lead to restricted joint movement. Often these restricted joints may not give your child any problems at all but could possibly pave the way for future problems if left uncorrected.
